ST. JOHNSBURY — Three people were seriously injured during a crash that took place this morning near the St. Johnsbury and Lyndon town line.

Police responded to the two-vehicle crash with injuries and entrapment on US Route 5 at around 10:50 a.m.

According to police, one of the drivers was identified as Melinda Mitchell, 28, of Lyndon.

Police say she crossed the double yellow lines into the oncoming path of Sandra Leach, 41, also of Lyndon.

The crash caused heavy front end damage to both vehicles.

Both operators and a 3-year-old child passenger in Leach’s vehicle were initially transported to NVRH.

“Leach and the child both sustained serious, life-threatening injuries as a result,” a statement issued by trooper Shaffer reads.

Mitchell sustained a lower leg injury, police say.

Leach is in critical care at NVRH while the child was transported via ground by DHART and is also in critical condition.

Police say the child was properly secured in a child safety seat.
