ST. JOHNSBURY — Police say a 44-year-old man from St. Johnsbury is being held without bail following a bizarre incident on Caledonia Street yesterday.

Johnnie Simpson is facing charges of aggravated assault, aggravated domestic assault, and cruelty to children after he allegedly broke into a St. Johnsbury home at around 7 a.m.

Simpson is said to have stabbed his girlfriend as she fled from the home.

Following the stabbing, Simpson is alleged to have barricaded himself inside, taking his 8-year-old daughter hostage.

The standoff lasted around three hours before Simpson released the child and surrendered to the police.

Authorities say the girl was not injured during the incident.
