LYNDON — A 28-year-old woman from Lyndon was arrested this morning on charges relating to a fatal crash that took place on Monday.

Police say Melinda Mitchell was arrested at around 10:30 a.m. at a residence on Calendar Brook Road in Lyndon.

Mitchell was transported to the St. Johnsbury Barracks where she was processed on charges of gross negligent operation-death resulting and gross negligent operation-serious bodily injury.

The court set Mitchell’s bail at $25,000.

In addition, Mitchell’s probation was revoked and she was lodged at the Northeast Regional Correctional Center in St. Johnsbury.

Police say following an investigation into the fatal crash, Mitchell was distracted while operating her vehicle north on Memorial Drive/US Route 5.

Her vehicle failed to negotiate a slight right curve in the roadway.

She drove through the curve and hit Sandra Leach, 41, of Lyndon, who was driving the other vehicle.

The impact killed a 3-year-old boy and left Leach in critical condition.

Mitchell was also issued traffic tickets as a result of this investigation for operating after suspension, failure to maintain lane, and operating without liability insurance.

She is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in Caledonia County Superior Court.
