ST. ALBANS — Former St. Albans police officer Sgt. Jason Lawton has been arrested on suspicion of simple assault arising from an incident at the police station earlier this year.

On Aug. 7, police were notified of an incident in which Lawton was reported to have assaulted Amy Connelly, 35, of Highgate Center, while she was in police custody back in March.

Investigators say Lawton had punched Connelly in the face while she was in handcuffs inside a holding cell at the St. Albans Police Department.

Connelly suffered injuries to her face and one of her eyes as a result of the blow.

Lawton was arrested today, processed and released on a citation to appear at the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in St. Albans at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, to answer the charge of simple assault.

Simple assault is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and $1,000 in fines.
