Police: South Hero man arrested for assaulting motorist who stopped to assist after DUI crash

COLCHESTER — A 32-year-old South Hero man was arrested on multiple charges including DUI after a crash with injuries in Colchester yesterday.

The crash took place on I-89 at around 12:05 p.m.

Police say that Steven G. Bessette Jr. was headed south at a high rate of speed, lost control, and crashed into a steel guidewire.

Bessette got into a verbal confrontation with another motorist who stopped to check on him and hit the motorist in the face with a closed fist.

Police say that motorists then hit Bessette in the face and knocked him unconscious.

Bessette was transported to UVMC for injuries related to the crash.

He was arrested at UVMC and processed for DUI at the Williston State Police barracks.

He is facing the charges of DUI#2, careless and negligent operation, simple assault, as well as disorderly conduct.

Police say he is required to appear in court on January 16 to answer to the above charges.
