ST. ALBANS — A 35-year-old St. Albans man was arrested for DUI, excessive speed and gross negligent operation on South Main Street yesterday.

Police say they observed suspicious activity in front of Mega Real Estate at around 1:45 a.m.

Officers observed one of the vehicles leave the parking lot and head south.

According to the police report, the car was travelling in excess of seventy 70 miles-per-hour in the posted 35 miles-per-hour zone.

In the area of 302 South Main Street the car passed another car and accelerated to approximately eighty 80 miles-per-hour, police say.

Police conducted a traffic stop, and as the vehicle pulled into a driveway police say an alcoholic beverage container was thrown from the car.

When the vehicle stopped, police identified the passenger fled the car and ran into the woods.

The driver, identified as Nathan Cheney, 35, of St. Albans, was taken into custody.

Police say they observed Cheney exhibit numerous indicators of alcohol and drug impairment.

They seized his vehicle when drug paraphernalia was observed inside.

Additionally, Cheney was found to have active pre-trial conditions of release for a prior DUI drug and crack cocaine possession case.

He was lodged at Northwest State Correctional Center.
