Berlin Mall hosts Red Cross blood drive as others turn them away

BERLIN — Fear of a looming blood shortage has the Red Cross partnering with the local mall when others have turned them away resulting from the COVID-19 crisis.

The Berlin Mall regularly hosts the Red Cross in the HUB community space, where they continue to top donor records.

Plans to double up blood drives at the mall are in the works as blood levels plummet.

“We are so glad that Berlin Mall stepped up during this critical need for blood when others need to step back,” said Red Cross Account Manager, Kathleen Luce.

Saturday, April 4, will be the next scheduled drives hosted by the mall in front of the closed JC Penney store.

The mall is an ideal open space and location for this essential service to the community.

“We had serious concerns about hosting the blood drives,” said Mall Operations representative Kay Nuissl, “but the life-saving benefits far outweigh any fear-based disadvantages. We want to do our part to help and send a positive message to our patrons and the donors who are also eager to help.”

All donors are encouraged to make an appointment to minimize wait times and adhere to the social distancing policy.
