WAITSFIELD — On Sunday morning the Waitsfield Fire Department and several nearby departments including Warren, Moretown, and Waterbury, responded to a fire at Mehuron’s Plaza in Waitsfield.
The building contains several local businesses and authorities say it was unclear at first which building the fire was in, but was later determined to be inside Infinite Sports.
Firefighters made entry into the building and were able to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading into the other businesses on either side.
Waitsfield Fire Chief, Tripp Johnson, contacted the Dept. of Public Safety Fire & Explosion Unit to conduct an origin and cause investigation.
The origin of the fire was determined to be at a wooden countertop where several electronic devices were plugged in, including a cash register, computer with monitor, power strips, and some lithium battery charging ports.
Investigators say the cause of the fire is undetermined but is directly related to some sort of electrical malfunction issue.
The entire inventory of the ski shop is considered a total loss and the dollar value amount is yet to be determined.
Nobody was injured during the blaze.
The business structure is said to be salvageable but will need extensive cleanup from the heavy soot deposits and fire damage along with the melting of the electrical wires and any plastics and rubber.
Many of the businesses in the building were already back in operation within a few hours while some may require some repairs before they open again.
