SOUTH BURLINGTON — A 59-year-old Waterbury man died following a crash in South Burlington on September 4.

The single-vehicle crash took place south on Interstate 89 near the Whales Tails.

The driver was identified as James Sheldon.

Police say Sheldon left the road and traveled into the median, then continued for several hundred feet until hitting a large rock pile.

The vehicle then hit a concrete culvert which may have caused it to roll or flip at some point.

Police say there were two occupants in the vehicle.

With the assistance of several passing motorists who stopped and offered to help, the passenger was able to get out of the vehicle.

Police say the occupant was transported to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and was later released.

Sheldon was transported to UVMMC for treatment of critical injuries, but he succumbed to his injuries.

Police say they are still investigating this crash.
